Tasmanian 6 Night Extended Multi Day Tour Hobart to Strahan: Day 3

Located close to Hobart’s picturesque waterfront, Salamanca Market is one of Australia’s largest and most vibrant outdoor markets. Each Saturday more than 300 stalls pop-up along historic Salamanca Place to showcase arts, crafts, jewellery, fresh food and produce, collectables and homewares. First held in 1972, Tasmania’s most visited attraction has grown from a small collection of informal traders to a beloved iconic market, described by many visitors as the “best market in Australia”. Talk to the artisans and craftspeople who create their products especially for Salamanca Market, there are plenty of free tastings and samples to enjoy and an abundance of Tasmanian-made and designed products.

We will depart Hobart mid-morning and tour through the delightful Derwent Valley. We will visit an amazing part of Tasmania's history which has been created by talented sculptor Greg Duncan - The Wall in the Wilderness. After leaving Derwent Bridge we will travel through to Wild Rivers National Park. You will be able to enjoy a rainforest boardwalk to the gorgeous Nelson Falls before passing through the copper mining town of Queenstown and arriving in Strahan - which will be our home for the next two nights.

Sculptor Greg Duncan is carving the history of Tasmanian Highlands in the form of a sculpted wall. So far Greg has carved scenes depicting the workers of the Hydro-Electric Scheme and of the forestry industry, along with scenes concerning the environmental plight of the wedge-tail eagle and the extinction of the Thylacine. This is an amazing sight and one you are sure to enjoy.

Depart Strahan and view the scenic Tyndall Range as you travel to Cradle Mountain National Park. Board the shuttle bus to Dove Lake. This lake was formed by glaciation and the unique habitat includes the Tasmanian deciduous beech, tussock grasses, snow gums and pencil pines. grasses, snow gums and pencil pines. See spectacular Cradle Mountain and visit the Walheim Chalet - the forest home of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer. There are numerous animals wandering the shores of this lake - including wombats, echidnas and pademelons Enjoy some lunch and then pop in to the Wilderness Gallery. A visit to see some cute Tassie Devils is not to be missed. Devils @ Cradle is a unique Tasmanian conservation sanctuary located at the entrance to the spectacular World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain National Park.

The sanctuary is also home to the closely related Spotted-tail and Eastern quolls. Tasmania’s three largest carnivorous marsupials are all now threatened in one way or another in the wild. Visitors to the sanctuary can view these animals from the comfort of the visitor centre, wander through the sanctuary at their leisure, or join a personalised guided tour which ensures a close up encounter with our animals. We will head to Sheffield - The Town of Murals - and our accommodation tonight will be in Devonport.

The 'Town of Murals' maintains over 150 murals throughout the town that depict the stories and history of Sheffield and its residents. You might like to wander along to the museum which features items from every day life such as clothing, household appliances, wall phones and farm equipment from the late 1800s. The first change-giving automatic petrol pump ever to be invented takes pride of place in the Kentish Museum because the inventor came from Sheffield. The intriguing story of how this machine came on to the world stage is one of missed opportunity.

The Goliath Portland Cement Company at Railton started its journey in the 1920's. Throughout it's history, the company has produced the highest quality cement available in the world. This cement has been used in both large and small building projects within Australia, including Sydney Harbour Bridge. Historical machinery from the Goliath Portland Cement Company can be found at the Kentish Museum.
